Maximizing Feedback Benefits

When you are just starting out as an artist you might have worked really hard on making your track sound as good as possible. Then you maybe submit your track to playlist curators and are thinking that everyone must love this track the same way as you do. Often when you are new, you might get a bit disappointed by the feedback you get from different curators. They don’t want to share your track and are writing to you why they don’t think your track fit their playlist, blog etc.

The feedback can be that they don’t like your song due to technical reasons: It’s not mixed in a way they like or they don’t like the singing performance and so on. You should always read the feedback and sometimes it is a valid point that can learn from and get better for your next release. But bear in mind that the feedback is a personal opinion from just that person, it is not an opinion that the whole world agrees to. The opinion about music is so different from person to person.

Many curators are artists themselves, so exploring their music could be rewarding. You might enjoy their songs and gain insight into their tastes. However, remember that their advice might steer you toward a style they prefer. If you appreciate their music, it’s beneficial, but if not, their feedback may not be relevant to you. Avoid wasting energy on unhelpful suggestions and focus on what truly matters to you.

Sometimes, you may receive rude feedback that can upset you and tempt you to respond in a similar manner. However, doing so is unproductive and drains energy that could be better spent on more productive tasks.

Constructive feedback is valuable for reflection and growth, while it’s best to disregard unconstructive criticism.

However, it’s important to reflect on feedback without immediately implementing every suggestion. Some feedback may contradict other opinions due to personal preferences.

Remember, you are the best judge of your preferences and the sound you’re aiming for. Don’t let anyone else dictate that to you.

Occasionally, you might receive negative comments on your social media. Stay strong—simply delete or hide them without engaging in arguments. This approach conserves your time and energy for more worthwhile pursuits. Some individuals are unpleasant, and there’s little you can do to change that. When I come across such negativity, I remind myself that these individuals take the time to leave rude comments on lesser-known independent artists’ profiles. I can’t comprehend their mindset, as it’s something I would never do. I usually assume they’re either intoxicated or misguided and feel a bit sorry for them. Then, I just delete the comment.
